Quick answer: Visitors to Shaanxi have three practical ways to get online: an eSIM installed before you fly, a physical tourist SIM that includes a Chinese number, or a China Mobile SIM registered with your passport at a service hall. For most short trips the eSIM is the easiest; the hall route suits longer stays. Xi'an is the main gateway, and our directory lists 36 China Mobile halls there.

Shaanxi Mobile Connectivity at a Glance

  • Networks: China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom, all national networks.
  • Main gateways: Xi'an Xianyang International Airport and Xi'an North Railway Station.
  • China Mobile hotline: 10086, or 029-10086 from a Xi'an number. Online hall: 10086.cn (choose Shaanxi).
  • Local SIM rule: your passport is required for real-name registration at a hall.
  • Hall directory: Xi'an only (36 halls). Other Shaanxi cities are not covered yet.
  • Easiest for a short trip: an eSIM installed before departure.
About this guide: I have run china-mobile-phones.com since 2003 as an independent site. It is not affiliated with China Mobile, China Unicom or China Telecom, and the advice here is not tied to one carrier.

Which Should You Pick?

If you are visiting Shaanxi briefly and want maps, messaging and translation working the moment you land, choose an eSIM. If you want a Chinese number for things like deliveries or ride-hailing, pick a SIM that comes with one, either a tourist SIM or a China Mobile SIM registered at a hall. If you already have an international roaming plan you are happy with, you may not need anything extra.

Five Ways to Get Connected in Shaanxi

1. eSIM installed before you fly Editor's Pick

An eSIM is installed on your phone before you leave home, so data works when you land at Xianyang airport or step off the train at Xi'an North. It needs an eSIM-capable, unlocked phone; you can check yours with our China phone compatibility checker. It carries data only, not a Chinese phone number.

2. Tourist SIM with a Chinese number

A physical SIM on the China Unicom network that includes a real Chinese number, which helps with verification codes and local services. You can order it before you travel through Talktiko or an Amazon listing.

3. China Mobile SIM from a service hall

Take your passport to a China Mobile hall and register in person. This suits longer stays and gives you a local number on China Mobile's network. In Xi'an, the service hall directory lists 36 halls by district with addresses and opening hours.

4. International roaming from your home carrier

Keeps your own number and needs no set-up in China, but charges and daily caps vary a lot between carriers, so compare your carrier's China day-pass price with the other options first.

5. Virtual number for Chinese SMS codes

If you only need to receive verification codes for apps such as WeChat or Alipay, a virtual number can do the job without a Chinese SIM. See our guide to receiving China SMS online.

Plans & Top-Up

Travel eSIMs are sold by duration and data allowance, and prices change, so check the provider's page for current plans rather than relying on a figure here. For a China Mobile number, you can top up in the 中国移动 app, through Alipay or WeChat Pay (search 话费充值), by calling 10086, or at any service hall.

Where You Might Use Your SIM in Shaanxi

Xi'an. The provincial capital and main gateway, with the city wall, Bell Tower and Muslim Quarter. The Terracotta Army is in nearby Lintong District. See the Xi'an service hall directory.
Xianyang. Xi'an Xianyang International Airport sits here, north-west of Xi'an, so many visitors land in Xianyang before heading into the city.
Huashan. Mount Hua, one of China's best-known mountains, is a popular day trip from Xi'an. Download offline maps first, as mountain signal can be patchy.
Baoji. Home to Famen Temple and a base for Taibai Mountain trips.
Yan'an. Known for its revolutionary-history sites, reached from Xi'an by rail or road.

Hall lists for cities other than Xi'an are not on this site yet. Call 10086 to find the nearest China Mobile hall elsewhere in Shaanxi.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can tourists buy a local SIM card in Shaanxi?
Yes. China requires real-name registration, so you need your passport and must register in person at a service hall. In Xi'an, our directory of 36 China Mobile halls shows where to go. If you would rather skip the queue, an eSIM installed before you travel avoids the visit altogether.
What is the best option for a short trip to Xi'an?
For most short visits an eSIM is the simplest: you install it before flying and your phone has data on arrival. Choose a SIM that includes a Chinese number only if you need one for deliveries, ride-hailing or Chinese banking apps.
Do I need a VPN with a local SIM in Shaanxi?
A SIM bought in China connects through China's networks, where many foreign services such as Google and WhatsApp are restricted. Many roaming and travel eSIMs route your traffic outside mainland China, which generally avoids this, but check your provider's description before you rely on it.
Where can I get a China Mobile SIM in Xi'an?
Visit a China Mobile service hall with your passport. The most central is the Zhonglou Flagship Store on Nandajie in Beilin District. The full list, with addresses and hours, is in our Xi'an service hall directory.
Will a SIM bought in Xi'an work in the rest of Shaanxi?
Mobile networks are national, so a China SIM works across Shaanxi and the rest of the mainland. Signal can be weaker in mountain and rural areas, so download offline maps before heading out of the cities.
What is the China Mobile hotline for Shaanxi?
Dial 10086 from a China Mobile number, or 029-10086 from a Xi'an number. China Mobile's online hall is at 10086.cn; choose Shaanxi as your region.
How do I get a Chinese number for WeChat or Alipay verification codes?
A travel eSIM is data-only, so it will not receive Chinese SMS codes. Options are a SIM that includes a Chinese number, a China Mobile SIM registered at a hall, or a virtual number service. Our guide to receiving China SMS online explains the virtual-number route.
How do I top up a China Mobile number in Shaanxi?
Use the 中国移动 app, pay through Alipay or WeChat Pay (search 话费充值), call 10086 and follow the prompts, or visit a service hall.

How This Page Was Put Together

The general advice on registration, networks and top-up reflects standard practice for SIM cards in mainland China. Hall details come only from the Xi'an directory, which names its sources. I have deliberately left out prices, airport counter claims and hall details for cities I have no verified data for, rather than guess.
